Dr. Sarang Patil’s professional journey has been shaped by a combination of formal education, decades of clinical practice, research, teaching, and a continuing commitment to bringing different dimensions of health together. Rather than following a single discipline, his path has developed across several interconnected areas: naturopathy, yoga, psychophysiology, clinical practice, academic teaching, research, and integrative medicine.
This is best understood not as a list of qualifications, but as the development of a physician whose professional identity has evolved through education, experience, and sustained engagement with the wider healthcare community.
Beginning with Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences
Dr. Patil completed his Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (B.N.Y.S.), a full-time residential course, in 1994, followed by a one-year internship at S.D.M. College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Ujire, under Mangalore University. This early training established the foundation for his subsequent work in naturopathy, yoga, lifestyle-oriented health, and preventive approaches.
But the journey did not stop with an undergraduate qualification. His later academic work moved increasingly toward understanding the relationship between physiological processes, psychological states, and yoga-based practices.
From Clinical Training to Psychophysiology
In January 2007, Dr. Patil completed a Ph.D. in Psychophysiology at Swami Vivekananda Yoga University (sVYASA), Bangalore. His doctoral thesis was titled “A Comparison of Psychophysiological Effects of Two Yogic Meditation Techniques,” guided by Dr. H. R. Nagendra and Dr. Shirley Telles.
Psychophysiology provided an important bridge between two areas often discussed separately: psychological experience and measurable physiological responses, a pattern that has run through much of his later work in yoga, relaxation, stress, breathing, and integrative health.
A Clinical Journey Spanning Decades
Education became meaningful through clinical experience. Dr. Patil’s clinical career began in the 1990s and has continued across naturopathy hospitals, yoga-therapy settings, multispecialty healthcare, and holistic-health environments.
From January 1996 to December 2000, he worked as a Consulting Yoga and Naturopathic Physician at Bhartiya Nisargopchar Kendra, a naturopathy hospital in Kolhapur. From December 1997 to September 2002, he held the same role at Lotus Hospital & Research Center, a multispecialty hospital in Kolhapur, placing naturopathic and yoga-based clinical practice alongside a broader hospital environment.
From September 2002 to May 2005, he served as a Consulting Yoga and Naturopathic Physician at Arogyadhama, the yoga-therapy health home associated with Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (sVYASA), Bangalore, a period that brought clinical practice into close contact with yoga research and academic work.
Since September 2002, Dr. Patil has served as Medical Director at Anandkunj – Shivambu Naturopathy and Yoga Asharam in Kolhapur, described as a centre for preventive and integrative medicine. He has also conducted yoga therapy classes for the general public, patients, and school children since September 1995, a reminder that health education is not limited to treating illness after it appears; it also means helping people understand their bodies and use movement, breath, and lifestyle as part of everyday wellbeing.
Sampurna Swasthya: Bringing the Journey Together
Since September 2016, Dr. Patil has been the Founder Director of Sampurna Swasthya – Holistic Health Retreat Center, an initiative of Happy Thoughts at MaNaN Asharam, Pune.
Sampurna suggests completeness or wholeness; Swasthya refers to health. Together, the name points toward health understood as something broader than the absence of a diagnosed disease, a perspective that connects his earlier education in naturopathy and yoga with his later work in mind-body medicine, lifestyle, preventive health, and integrative approaches.
An Academic Journey Alongside Clinical Work
Since September 2002, Dr. Patil has served as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Yoga and Biosciences at sVYASA, Bangalore. Since September 2024, he has also served as Honorary Professor in the Department of Naturopathy at Government Naturopathy College and Hospital, Kagal, Kolhapur, under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.
Earlier academic appointments included Head, Department of Naturopathy & Yoga, Ganga Educational Society’s Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy (June 1996 to May 1999), and Assistant Professor, Department of Swasthya Vrutta and Community Medicine, Ganga Ayurvedic Medical College, Kolhapur (June 1996 to September 2002). Teaching has therefore been a recurring component of his career, not a separate activity added later.
Research: Asking Questions About Yoga and the Human System
From September 2002 to May 2005, Dr. Patil served as a Research Fellow in the Department of Yoga Research at sVYASA, Bangalore. He has also served as Director for Research at KHOJ – Center for Research in Preventive and Integrative Medicine, and as Secretary of the Shivambu Health Research Institute, a registered research organization in Kolhapur.
His published research includes studies examining physiological and psychophysiological responses to yoga-based relaxation practices, among them, work on p300 changes, oxygen consumption and respiration, heart-rate variability, performance, and cyclic meditation and energy expenditure following yoga-based relaxation techniques, several co-authored with Dr. Shirley Telles.
Writing and Knowledge Sharing
Dr. Patil’s work has also extended into public education through writing: publications in newspapers and magazines related to yoga and naturopathy, and authorship of books including Jivanacha Adhar Naisargic Ahar (naturopathic diet, in Marathi and Hindi), Panch-Kosha Chikitsa (yoga, in Marathi and Hindi), and Ashtangik Chikitsa (yoga, in Marathi and Hindi). He has also served as a reviewer for the Indian Journal of Yoga, Executive Editor of Shivambu Samachar, and Editor of Jiveen Jal.
Engagement with Professional and Public Institutions
Dr. Patil has been a member of the Governing Body of the National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN), Pune, Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, since 2009, and has served as General Secretary of the National Governing Council of the Indian Naturopathy and Yoga Graduates Medical Association (INYGMA). He has also served as an honorary yoga and naturopathy consultant at the Department of Ayurveda and Panchakarma at CPR Hospital, Kolhapur, and as faculty for seminars and workshops on research methodology and advances in yoga and naturopathy.
His public engagement has included invited keynote presentations at national and international conferences, including the Second World Conference on Urine Therapy in Gersfeld, Germany, in 1999.
Medicine as a Continuing Responsibility
One of the defining characteristics of a medical career is that learning never really ends. New evidence can challenge established practices; patients present with increasingly complex combinations of medical, social, and personal circumstances. A physician therefore has a responsibility to remain curious, informed, reflective, and willing to learn, a principle that has remained relevant throughout Dr. Patil’s professional development, alongside his formal record of degrees, appointments, and publications.
What “Integrative” Means in This Journey
Integrative health does not mean choosing between modern medicine and traditional or complementary approaches. A responsible integrative approach begins by understanding a person’s health concern and determining what kind of medical evaluation or treatment may be appropriate. Alongside that, there may be opportunities to consider nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, yoga, breathing practices, and other lifestyle factors. Traditional systems may also offer perspectives that are meaningful to an individual, provided they are approached thoughtfully and do not replace necessary medical care.
Looking Ahead
The story of Dr. Sarang Patil’s professional development does not end with the qualifications and appointments recorded above. Those provide the factual framework of his career; the more important question is how that education and experience continue to influence his work, his approach to patients, his engagement with colleagues and students, and his contribution to healthcare.
His professional journey remains an evolving one, shaped by the same principles that have guided his development from medical student to practicing physician: learning, responsibility, service, and continuous improvement.
